Paloma (Spanish for “dove”) sits on a steep, tree-lined ridge at the very top of Spring Mountain. A short drive from San Francisco, it’s seemingly miles away from anywhere, with sweeping vistas of the vine-carpeted valley floor. The success of the wine is a result of the terroir, the various micro-climates, the Richards’ dedication to farming, and multi-generational winemaking.
High above the Napa Valley and the morning fog, Paloma Vineyard is generally about 10 degrees cooler on hot summer days than the valley floor. The more moderate temperatures, our volcanic soils, and the unique sun exposures around the very top of Spring Mountain are what make Paloma wines so special, adding layers of complexity to the mid-palate and long finishes.
We started making wine in 1994 and by 2000, Paloma Vineyard wines began to garner outstanding reviews. The 2001 vintage of the Paloma Merlot, named Wine Spectator’s “WINE OF THE YEAR” in 2003, sparked a loyal following for our elegant, mountain fruit wines. Paloma Merlot graced the Top 100 again in 2006 and 2009 at 54th and 65th, respectively. Our 2001 and 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon also received honorable mentions from James Laube of Wine Spectator.
Paloma continues to produce first-class Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for our faithful followers from around the world.

Paloma Merlot is a blend of estate grapes: Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon ranges from 14 to 16 percent depending on the vintage. The resulting wine is a big, world-class red capable of improving with bottle aging for at least 20 years in most vintages. Although the characteristics of the wine vary with each vintage, they have a consistent thread of complex aromas of blackberry fruits, black stone fruits, chocolate, tobacco, spice, and floral notes with a mineral overtone. On the palate, the wine has a silky mouthfeel, is well balanced with flavors of berries, fruit, cocoa, cassis, and spice, and enjoys a long spicy finish. The addition of the Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure, rich fruit, and a subtle increase in tannins.
At Paloma, our Cabernet Sauvignon is pure. Aged in French oak barrels–a third new–our vintages exhibit a deep, intensely concentrated style red packed with layers of opulence. Our Cabernets deliver a complex mix of zesty, vibrant wild berry, raspberry, currant, and blackberry fruit in a firm, seamless way. Full-bodied and improving with every sip, they end with a complex mix of espresso and wild berry.
As the name states, this ‘plush and polished’ blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc is a tribute to the late co-founder of Paloma Vineyard, Barbara Richards. Her son, Sheldon Richards, now owner and winemaker, pays homage to his mother’s relentless work ethic, no-bullshit character, and humble roots in this remarkable offering. With ‘vibrant black cherry, mocha, and toasty spice flavors that sail on a long and lush finish’, this wine is sure to impress. While originally planned as a single vintage release, the exceptional feedback has enticed the winemaker; there may be more to come.
As with all our wines, our Cabernet Franc is made with 100% estate-grown fruit. With the first vines being planted in 2017, our first release is planned for 2025. It will be a non-vintage comprising of our first two crops: 2019 & 2021. This wine is still young in the bottle, so stay tuned for more…
Founders of Paloma Vineyard, Barbara and Jim Richards, dreamt of building a vineyard focused on sustainable farming that would highlight the grapes and terroir of their favorite region. This dream was realized in 1983 when a friend, Dan Duckhorn, called and told them about the property now known as Paloma Vineyard. Over the next 25 years, Jim and Barbara worked to clear, plant, and cultivate the 7,500 Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Barbara’s devotion to the vines was abundantly evident having once claimed, “I can name all 7,500 of my children.”
After their passings in 2009 and 2016, Jim and Barbara’s legacy has left its mark on Spring Mountain and in the Napa Valley.

17 acres of land at the top of Spring Mountain is purchased. After a few years of hard labor clearing, terracing, and planting, 15 of those will soon be planted with a mix of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
Jim and Barbara initially sold grapes to Napa Valley wineries, including Pride Vineyard just across the street, while continuing to cultivate the land.
Jim and Barbara built their forever home and moved to Paloma Vineyard full-time. 575 cases of the first Paloma Merlot Vintage, 1994, are release in 1996 and 150 cases of the first vintage of Paloma Syrah, 1996, is released in 1998. The winery construction is finished just in time for harvest in 2000.
Sheldon, Jim & Barbara's son, joins them at Paloma Vineyard. Wine Spectator names Paloma's 2001 Merlot ``Wine of the Year`` in 2003. The 2002 and 2006 Merlot also make the Wine Spectator Top 100 lists.
In 2009, Jim passes after a lengthy battle with cancer, but not before sharing his winemaking secrets with Sheldon. Sheldon continues Jim's wine making legacy of excellent, with the 2009 Paloma Cabernet Sauvignon, his first solo vintage since Jim's passing. It receives special acknowledgement by the Wine Spectator in 2012.
Paloma's Matriarch, Barbara, passes peacefully in her sleep in the fall of 2016.
From 2016-2018, 700 vines of Cabernet Franc replace a small portion of aging Merlot vines throughout the vineyard. Starting in 2019, Sheldon's sons, Jace and Caston, begin taking on invested roles at Paloma.
LNU & Glass fires ravage Napa in the fall of 2020. Fire burned the entire perimeter of the property, but thanks to the incredible work of California's fire crews the vineyard survived. Unfortunately, Paloma's entire crop is lost to smoke taint.
In 2003, Sheldon joined the family-owned Paloma Vineyard in Napa, California. He spent the next six years learning viticulture (grape farming) from his mother, Barbara, and oenology (winemaking) from his father. Barbara instilled in Sheldon to respect the vines as if each were one of his children – over 7,500 in total. Jim taught Sheldon how to let the wine make itself with minimal intervention.
In 2007, Sheldon became the full-time Paloma winemaker and continues to build on Jim and Barbara’s legacy. Under Sheldon’s winemaking artistry, Paloma’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon was listed as Wine Spectator’s “Spectator Selections – Highly Recommended” in 2011.
Caston, Sheldon’s oldest son, manages Paloma’s off-site sales, business development, and marketing from his home in the Okanagan Valley of British Colombia, where he lives with his partner Heidi and their daughter Julia. Caston spent his younger days working in the hospitality industry and traveling as much of the world as he could. Since settling down, he has completed a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and followed in Sheldon’s entrepreneurial footsteps as a partner in Modbox Studios, a backyard office startup, while working to learn the family business on the side. After two years with Modbox, he chose to step back from the startup and step into the wine realm full-time to help Sheldon manage Paloma. When he visits Napa, he enjoys working alongside Sheldon in the winery learning the ropes from his father.
Originally from Issaquah, Washington, Laura’s appreciation of wine was nurtured while completing her BA in Global Studies & Art at the University of Washington. Since completing her degree, she has worked with Chateau St. Michelle, Stag’s Leap, and Conn Creek. In June of 2023, Laura will be completing her MS in Entrepreneuship at the Whitman School of Management in Syracuse, NY. Since joining the Paloma team in March of 2023, Laura’s role has involved her in all facets of the business, including helping Sheldon host our wonderful guests in the tasting room!
Born in Michyoacan, Mexico, Jose immigrated to the US to start a family with his wife. Now the proud parent of 1 girl and 2 boys, Jose loves to landscape when he isn’t found in the vineyard or winery. Jose started with Paloma in 2008, learning how to cultivate grapes from Barabara and how to make wine from Jim. Now, Jose and Sheldon work hand in hand; Jose is the eyes and the ears of Paloma’s operation, tending to the vines just as Barbara would want.
Franc and Mita spend their days supervising the vineyard. Generally, they follow the food. Breakfast and dinner at the house, “lunch” with Jose in the vineyard, keeping an eye on tasting guests in between–you never know what they might drop. Don’t be alarmed by their loud barks, they are both lovers at heart just saying hello to new visitors!
There are 6-8 different soil types across our 17 acres ranging from Sonoma volcanics to Franciscan sandstone.
The cool ocean breezes blowing in from Sonoma County in combination with the dry heat from the Napa Valley contribute to our unique fruit structure.
7000 vines are planted over 15 acres including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc varietals.
As an estate winery, our wines are made exclusively with the fruit we have grown ourselves. This is the only way we can assure the time and care required to grow the best fruit.
