Paloma’s Annual Vertical Tasting
Join us for our third annual Vertical Tasting, an intimate experience led by owner and winemaker Sheldon Richards. Set high atop Spring Mountain, this year’s tasting explores two focused chapters in Paloma’s history: 1999–2001 and 2009–2011 Merlot.
The first three vintages—1999, 2000, and 2001—were made by Jim Richards & drawn from Sheldon’s personal cellar. Now more than two decades old, these wines reflect an important early era for Paloma, when careful farming and patient cellaring were laying the groundwork for what was to come. At the center is the 2001 Merlot—the vintage that brought international recognition when it was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator and received 95 points, the highest score ever awarded to a Merlot at that time.
Exactly ten years later, we revisit the vineyard through the 2009, 2010, and 2011 vintages, made by Winemaker Sheldon Richards. Tasted alongside the earlier trio, these wines offer a rare opportunity to see how both vine maturity and winemaking perspective evolve over a decade—while the core character of Spring Mountain Merlot remains unmistakably consistent.
Together, these six wines form a deliberate comparison: two consecutive three-year windows separated by ten years. It’s a chance to taste continuity and growth side by side, in a setting that invites conversation rather than ceremony.
As always, we’ll have some charcuterie to nibble on and we will include at least one bonus pour, typically served blind, that ties into the theme of the vertical. This experience is intentionally small and personal, so space is limited. Wines from the tasting will be offered exclusively as a complete six-bottle vertical set and will not be available for individual purchase.
We look forward to sharing this next chapter with you.
