As a family-run winery on Napa’s Spring Mountain, we’ve spent over 40 years embracing methods that respect both the land and future generations. Sustainable wine and our winemaking is a year-round commitment, and for us, every decision, from vineyard management to bottling, is an opportunity to honor this responsibility.
A History of Family Winemakers
Our story began with Jim Richards, who, alongside Barbara, founded Paloma Vineyard with a vision of crafting wines that reflect the magic of Spring Mountain. Their values and passion for the land laid the foundation for our family’s winemaking and farming practices. Twenty years later, Sheldon Richards continued the legacy, blending tradition with innovation to elevate our wines. Now, as Caston Richards steps into his role as winemaker-in-training, he brings fresh ideas and a deep respect for sustainability.
Sustainability: A Year-Round Doctrine
Sustainable winemaking is more than just a harvest-season practice; it’s an all-weather philosophy. Whether it’s pruning vines in winter, spreading compost between rows before the rains, or managing cover crops to enrich the soil, every season plays a role in building the health of our vineyard.
We’ve also made choices that prioritize sustainability in our operations:
- Solar Power: Over 90% of our energy needs are met through solar panels, reducing our carbon footprint while embracing renewable energy.
- Cork and Glass Choices: We partner with companies like Amorim (sustainably harvested corks) and Saver Glass (eco-friendly glass) to ensure our packaging is as thoughtful as our wine.
- Man-Powered Over Machine-Powered: From hand-harvesting grapes to delicate sorting, our reliance on human labor adds not just depth to our wine but also builds a connection to the land for everyone involved.
The Road Ahead
As Caston Richards takes the reins, he’s exploring innovative ways to deepen our sustainability efforts. Whether through expanding biodiversity, experimenting with drought-tolerant rootstocks, or rethinking water use in the vineyard, his vision promises to build on Paloma’s legacy while preparing us for future challenges.
“Sustainability goes beyond visible changes—it’s a mindset that recognizes how every decision, no matter how small, creates a ripple effect. Whether in business or farming, sustainability is a deliberate and impactful choice.”—Caston Richards
A Commitment to Excellence and Care
For us, sustainable wine isn’t just about minimizing impact—it’s about creating wines that speak to the heart of our mountain home. Every bottle of Paloma wine carries the character of Spring Mountain, the care of a family that cherishes this land, and the promise of a future rooted in respect for nature.
