Elevating Wine with Sustainable Practices: A Legacy of Great Vines

December 31, 2024

At our sustainable winery and vineyard , every choice we make reflects our commitment to preserving the environment and crafting exceptional wines. From innovative trellising systems to thoughtful vineyard management, we strive to balance nature’s needs with our vision for creating wines that tell a story in every sip.

A Unique Trellising System: The Geneva Double Curtain

One of our most distinctive features is our alternative Geneva Double Curtain trellising system. Unlike traditional methods such as Vertical Shoot Positioning, the Geneva Double Curtain approach allows our vines to grow over a horizontal wire and extend outward. This natural canopy creates essential shading for the fruit during the critical ripening season, protecting it from harsh sunburn. The result? Grapes that retain their delicate balance, leading to more elegant flavor characteristics in the glass.

Listening to the Land: Hillside Farming and Elevated Vine Training

As a hillside vineyard, we’ve adapted our practices to work with our terrain’s natural advantages. Training our vines higher serves dual purposes:

  1. Airflow Management : By keeping the vines elevated, we allow cold air to flow freely down the hill rather than settling on the plants. This strategic pathway prevents frost from damaging tender spring growth when the vines awaken from dormancy.
  2. Site-Specific Viticulture : Listening to our land means adapting to its unique microclimate. This elevated approach not only protects our vines but also contributes to the overall health of the vineyard ecosystem, including our picking crew and vineyard manager’s backs.

Experimenting with Cane Pruning

We’re currently experimenting with cane pruning in select areas of the vineyard. Exploring its potential to diversify flavor profiles while increasing yields for certain varieties. While these trials require careful planning and resource allocation—especially with our small but dedicated team—they are essential for evolving our vineyard practices and ensuring we stay at the forefront of sustainable winemaking.

A Legacy Rooted in Sustainability

Barbara and Jim’s philosophy was always simple, yet profound: “You can’t make great wine without great vines.” Their unwavering concern for the health and vitality of the vineyard has laid the foundation for a family legacy that endures today. By prioritizing the well-being of the vines and the land, they’ve created a sustainable winery that not only supports our family but also delivers wines of exceptional quality to those who share our passion.

Through innovation, respect for the environment, and a deep connection to the land, our vineyard continues to honor their vision. After all, sustainability isn’t just a practice—it’s the heart of our story, and it’s in every bottle we produce.

At Paloma, Merlot is the soul of our story. It is the grape that founders Jim & Barbara fell in love with on their journey to Spring Mountain. Picture this: it’s the late 1970s, and Barbara and Jim are visiting the Duckhorn vineyard, tasting their famed Three Palms Merlot. They lean into a sip and feel stirred—not just by the wine’s richness, but by its quiet elegance. That moment sparked something. They looked at each other and thought, “This is the wine we want to make. These are grapes we have to grow.” Before they even found the site, they had their hearts set on Merlot. By the time they found the raw land at the top of Spring Mountain, there was no changing their minds. Back then, planting Merlot at that elevation was almost unheard of—too cool, too risky. But they trusted their instincts and took the leap.

Merlot has captivated wine enthusiasts for over two centuries with its smooth texture, rich flavors, and remarkable versatility. As one of the most widely planted grape varietals in the world, Merlot holds a prominent place on dinner tables and in wine cellars from Bordeaux to Napa Valley. But what makes Merlot so special? The answer lies in the grape’s adaptability, the care that goes into its cultivation, and the sense of place reflected in every bottle.
