Climbing to New Peaks: A Wine Adventure on Spring Mountain

September 9, 2024

Nestled in the heart of Napa Valley, Spring Mountain offers an adventure for the senses and the soul. With its cool, misty mornings and rugged terrain, this AVA (American Viticultural Area) exudes a mountain charm that is both captivating and invigorating. If you're looking to combine your love of wine with a taste of adventure, Spring Mountain is the perfect destination.

The Journey Begins

Spring Mountain starts at the edge of the valley floor and climbs high above the morning fog where the air is crisp and the views are breathtaking. The drive up the mountain is an experience in itself, with winding roads that offer glimpses of vineyards clinging to steep hillsides and valleys blanketed in fog. When planning your trip, it's essential to allow extra time for these mountain roads—what looks like a short drive on the map can take longer than expected. But, the journey is worth it.

A Day of Wine Tasting

One of the best tips for wine tasting in Napa Valley is to organize your visits by AVA. Napa Valley is divided into several AVAs, each with its unique climate and soil, producing distinct wines. By focusing on one AVA at a time—like Spring Mountain—you can cut down on driving time and fully immerse yourself in the flavors of the region.Spring Mountain is home to some of the most revered wineries in Napa Valley. The wineries here are often small, family-owned operations where winemaking is a labor of love. The cooler mountain climate results in wines that are complex and elegant, with a distinctive minerality that reflects the rocky soils.

Start your day with a visit to Smith-Madrone Vineyards, where the Riesling is a standout, and the laid-back atmosphere makes you feel like you're part of the family. Next head to Pride Mountain Vineyards, where you can enjoy a tour of their historic caves and taste wines that straddle the Napa and Sonoma county lines. Pop into Paloma for a breathtaking view from the very top of the mountain, and some of our world renowned Merlot to top it off. Finish off the day at Keenan Winery, where the lush rolling mountain vineyard views are as impressive as the wines—don't miss our Cabernet Franc!

Savor the Mountain Charm

What sets Spring Mountain apart from other wine regions is its unique mountain charm. The vineyards here are more secluded, the tasting rooms less crowded, and if you’re lucky the winemakers might make an appearance. There's a sense of intimacy and authenticity that makes each visit special.

As you sip wine and soak in the views, you'll notice that Spring Mountain has a slower pace of life. It's a place where you can take a deep breath, enjoy the quiet, and connect with the land and the people who make this region so special.

Practical Tips for Your Adventure

  1. Plan ahead: Make appointments for tastings, as many Spring Mountain wineries require them.
  2. Allow extra time: The mountain roads are winding and narrow, and tastings have a way of stretching a bit longer, so give yourself plenty of time to get from one winery to the next.
  3. Pack a Picnic: Some wineries—Paloma for example—have beautiful picnic areas where you can enjoy your lunch with a recently purchased bottle of wine and a pretty spectacular view!
  4. Focus on one AVA at a time: To make the most of your day, stick to wineries in one AVA, like Spring Mountain, to reduce travel time and fully immerse yourself in the experience.

Final Thoughts

Spring Mountain in Napa Valley is an adventure that offers a deep connection to the land and a chance to discover wines that truly express their terroir. With its mountain charm, breathtaking views, and world-class wines, a visit to Spring Mountain is an experience you won't soon forget. Whether you're a seasoned wine enthusiast or a novice eager to learn more about the winemaking process, Spring Mountain offers an unforgettable journey into the heart of Napa Valley.

At Paloma, Merlot is the soul of our story. It is the grape that founders Jim & Barbara fell in love with on their journey to Spring Mountain. Picture this: it’s the late 1970s, and Barbara and Jim are visiting the Duckhorn vineyard, tasting their famed Three Palms Merlot. They lean into a sip and feel stirred—not just by the wine’s richness, but by its quiet elegance. That moment sparked something. They looked at each other and thought, “This is the wine we want to make. These are grapes we have to grow.” Before they even found the site, they had their hearts set on Merlot. By the time they found the raw land at the top of Spring Mountain, there was no changing their minds. Back then, planting Merlot at that elevation was almost unheard of—too cool, too risky. But they trusted their instincts and took the leap.

Merlot has captivated wine enthusiasts for over two centuries with its smooth texture, rich flavors, and remarkable versatility. As one of the most widely planted grape varietals in the world, Merlot holds a prominent place on dinner tables and in wine cellars from Bordeaux to Napa Valley. But what makes Merlot so special? The answer lies in the grape’s adaptability, the care that goes into its cultivation, and the sense of place reflected in every bottle.
